Caelan Doris Included in Ireland Team But McCarthy Omitted
Returning head coach the Ireland coach has named captain Caelan Doris in his Irish roster for the autumn Tests, however Joe McCarthy misses out.
The captain, absent from play since undergoing a shoulder operation in the start of May, recently returned to provincial training, but it remains unclear if he will be fit to play against New Zealand in the US on November 1.
Lock McCarthy, on the other hand, did not make the cut after failing to recover from the foot injury he sustained during the opening British and Irish Lions match against the Wallabies in July.
Ulster forward Izuchukwu and Munster wing Calvin Nash are not included due to injury, and full-back Hugo Keenan had already been ruled out after undergoing hip surgery after the summer tour.
Leinster prop McCarthy - the brother of Joe - is the only new player in the 34-player squad, however the Irish Rugby Football Union states new provincial duo Edwin Edogbo and Gleeson and once-capped Connacht winger Shayne Bolton will head to the US as "reserves".
After playing the All Blacks at the Chicago stadium in a rematch of their 2016 encounter, the team will play the Brave Blossoms, Australia and world champions South Africa in Dublin.
"It's an exciting group to the squad and it's a chance for the more experienced players and for those who made their debuts on the recent tour to the Lelos and the Lobos," commented Farrell, who returns to Ireland duty after taking a sabbatical to coach the British and Irish Lions to the southern hemisphere.
In a largely experienced selection, the Dublin club's Prendergast and the southern club's Crowley will again vie for the first-choice number 10 position. The fly-half role is still available, as the two players poised to face off for the first time in Saturday's United Rugby Championship match at Croke Park.
Frawley is the third fly-half chosen as the coach deciding not to selecting Leinster's Byrne.
At scrum-half, Farrell has picked Lions tourist Jamison Gibson-Park and Casey, who captained the national side to the summer international victories over Georgia and Portugal. Additionally, there is a recall for Connacht's Blade, chosen to club-mate Ben Murphy.
Robbie Henshaw, Bundee Aki, Garry Ringrose and McCloskey form an experienced cohort of centre choices. Osborne is another option in the centres, but the 23-year-old is also a frontrunner to deputise for Keenan at number 15.
Outside backs James Lowe, Hansen, Tommy O'Brien and Stockdale are named. The winger impressed on his first Ireland outings during the summer with two tries apiece in the wins over Georgia and Portugal.
McCarthy is the sole fresh addition in the Irish pack. The loose-head prop has started two of Leinster's three league matches so far and played in Ireland A's defeat by England in Bristol earlier this year.
McCarthy was selected in caretaker coach Paul O'Connell's summer squad, yet did not receive a international appearance.
Southern province lock Thomas Ahern, who received his first two caps in those matches, is retained, while experienced Ulster lock Henderson returns after sitting out the summer matches.
Jack Conan, who started all three Lions matches over the summer, is set to deputise for the captain should the captain does not regain fitness soon enough to play the All Blacks.
The Ireland squad will assemble in Dublin on Monday before traveling to the US on Tuesday.
