Egyptian Diplomatic Chief Urges the Palestinian Group to Agree to the US Gaza Peace Plan and Lay Down Arms
Egypt and Doha are working on attempts to convince the Palestinian faction to accept the former US president's demand to halt the conflict in Gaza, per the Egyptian top diplomat.
Increasing Pressure on Hamas
Egypt's foreign minister stated that the moment has arrived for the organization to surrender arms and avoid providing Israeli forces any justification to continue its offensive in Gaza, where numerous civilians were killed on Friday.
“Let’s not give any excuse for one party to use Hamas as a pretext for this mad daily killings of civilians. What’s happening is far beyond the 7th of October,” Abdelatty remarked.
He explained that Egypt is “working alongside Qatar and Turkey to encourage Hamas to accept the proposal”.
Details of the US Initiative
The plan would require the group to:
- Disarm and exit politics
- Release the captives in custody from the 2023 attack, including two dozen are believed to be living
As part of the deal, Israeli authorities would:
- Pull back its military from Gaza
- Substituted by an global peacekeeping unit
- Accept a transitional authority under the former president
Experts concur that the plan would effectively terminate Hamas’s identity as an fighting force, while the Israeli side would offer limited compromises.
Disagreements within Hamas
The group is reportedly split over how to respond, with some members requesting more time to evaluate the proposal.
A senior commander has objected to the plan, seeing it as a strategy to destroy the group whether or not they comply.
Sources close to the group suggest that the faction is expected to request changes regarding:
- Disarmament terms
- Continued presence of Israeli forces in Gaza
- Guarantees that the top officials will not be attacked
Humanitarian Crisis Deteriorates
Israel carried on its military actions in the northern area and bombardment across the region on Friday, fatally striking 28 people.
Several of the casualties were in the northern city, while the remaining were killed in southern Gaza, with three in an aerial attack in al-Masawi, which had been previously designated a secure area.
The Israeli military issued its last evacuation order for Gaza City on Wednesday, with the defence minister announcing that individuals left would be labeled as militants, a label that violates global norms.
A vast number of residents remain stranded in the city, many of whom who cannot afford the journey to the south, which reportedly costs over a thousand dollars.
“Countless individuals are forced to sleep outdoors while seeking refuge,” commented Sarah Davies.
United Nations agencies declared that there is nowhere secure for those escaping the city, as zones declared as “safe zones” in the south are lethal.
A UNICEF spokesperson labeled the notion of a safe zone as “unrealistic”, stating that bombs are dropped with “chilling predictability” and educational buildings used as refuges are regularly reduced to rubble.
Hospitals under Overwhelming Demand
Healthcare centers in southern Gaza are operating beyond capacity, with the medical unit treating significantly beyond its intended capacity.
On Thursday, a major medical facility admitted numerous fatalities of people shot dead by the troops.
Dr Ahmad al-Farra described the circumstances as “extremely difficult”.
Israeli forces has been accused of striking healthcare facilities and staff, with medical staff reportedly taken while traveling to work in the area.
Authorities has often stated that arrested medical officials had links with the group, though offering no substantiation.
Total casualties from the conflict in the strip has amounted to over 62,000 Palestinians dead and nearly 170,000 wounded, according to the medical sources.
