Gavin Newsom Tells Backers of Redistricting Measure to ‘Halt Financial Support’

With only one week left before California electorate head to the polling stations to determine on the state’s reapportionment proposal, Governor Newsom issued an unexpected communication to potential donors: keep your money.

“We've reached our budget goals and garnered sufficient resources so as to enact Proposition 50,” Gavin Newsom stated in an email. “Please halt further donations.”

Monetary Achievement

Over the course of a ten-week period, the campaign to endorse Proposition 50, which seeks to give Democrats more seats in the House of Representatives following freshly approved redistricted boundaries in Texas, collected $38m from approximately one point two million “minor financial supports,” Newsom announced.

This effort also garnered significant large donations, such as nearly $15 million from a Democratic political action committee, $10 million from a lobbying group backed by the financier George Soros and almost $four million dollars from a state teachers union, including other groups. Billionaire Tom Steyer, the former Democratic presidential candidate, has spent $12 million in backing the initiative.

Growing Popularity

The redistricting measure has grown in popularity following the state government proposed the initiative in the month of August. In the last weeks, influential Democrats including Former President Barack Obama have been urging the electorate to back the measure: “California, the entire country is relying on you,” Obama said in one ad. “Democracy is up for a vote.”

A recent poll indicated that 62% of probable voters stated they would approve on the proposition whereas different research showed that 57% of expected electorate in California backed it, and 37% were in opposition.

Rival Campaign Falters

Meanwhile, the campaign in opposition to the initiative has crumbled in the final stretch, based on media reports. The groups encouraging electorate to endorse Proposition 50 have significantly outraised their adversaries, with one outlet describing the “cash-strapped” initiative against the initiative as concluding with a “quiet demise.” The governor's effort currently holds $37 million in reserve whereas two no groups have merely $2.3m.

Wealthy donor Munger Jr, who was labeled as the leading financial backer of the initiative in opposition to the initiative, has markedly decreased contributions to the initiative. Kevin McCarthy, the former House speaker, had committed to collect $100 million to counter Proposition 50, but has secured merely $11 million.

Calculated Step

Considering endorsement of the measure strong and substantial funds available, his campaign team recently proposed he could cease modest contributions in the final days of the campaign. “I love it,” Gavin Newsom commented.

“The focus now is on executing the approach,” Governor Newsom expressed in the email declaring that supporters could halt financial support. “If we can do that, we’re will prevail.”

The supporting effort will exclusively distribute emails with developments on the proposition or to ask for support for other states “attempting to halt Republican interim reapportionment initiatives,” Newsom added.
