Previous Australian Lawmaker Imprisoned for Over Five Years for Criminal Acts
A former lawmaker convicted of attacking two young men he met through his position was given to 69 months in prison.

The former official, forty-four, has been in prison since last summer after the court found him guilty of attacking a victim and attacking another individual, in different occasions in over two years.
Ward represented the seaside community of the regional area in the state government from over a decade ago. He left his position as a political party official when allegations emerged in 2021 but refused to quit his seat and was re-elected in 2023.
Court Ruling
The presiding officer the court official took into account his visual impairment of legal blindness in the judgment and determined "no different consequence except for incarceration is appropriate".
The convicted individual, who appeared via remote connection at the courthouse, will undergo at least 45 months in detention before he can request parole.
The court official declared the legal system needs to "send a stern message to potential criminals that criminal acts of this nature will be faced with significant consequences".

Additionally stated the defendant had "escaped justice for a decade and experienced freedom without a rehabilitation program or consequence for his actions during those years".
Following the verdict, the politician initiated a rejected appeal attempt to continue in parliament and stepped down shortly before the congress could expel him.
His legal team has stated earlier he aims to appeal the conviction.
Incident Details
The defendant's lengthy proceedings in the state court heard that he asked a drunk 18-year-old man to his residence in 2013 and sexually abused him on multiple occasions, despite the victim's efforts to fight back.
Two years later, he raped a 24-year-old political staffer at his home after an event at parliament.
The defendant had maintained the later assault was fabricated, and that the additional accuser was misremembering their interaction from 2013.
However, prosecutors maintained that notable parallels in the accounts of the victims, who were unacquainted with one another, showed they were being honest.
The panel deliberated for 72 hours before delivering the findings of guilt.
The political exit prompted a special election in Kiama in last fall, which was secured by the Labor candidate.
