United Nations Lifts Sanctions on Syria's Leader Before White House Visit

Security Council representatives gave the green light to a US resolution to lift sanctions on Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa ahead of his presidential meeting the following week.

He was appointed interim leader subsequent to commanding an insurgent campaign that drove out the former president in the final month of 2024, concluding thirteen long years of domestic strife.

America's diplomat to the UN Mike Waltz said the UN had sent "an emphatic political statement" that acknowledged Syria entered "a different period" following Assad's ouster.

Sharaa was under global penalties in his role as head of the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), which was formerly linked to al-Qaeda. America delisted the organization from the catalog of global extremist entities during July.

Furthermore, global sanctions were ended on sanctions on Syrian Interior Minister the interior minister.

Syria's foreign minister expressed satisfaction with the elimination of the penalties, declaring through digital channels: "The nation shows its gratitude toward America and to friendly nations for their support the country and its population."

Upcoming White House Meeting

Sharaa's White House visit on Monday comes after President Trump remarked that Sharaa achieved "significant advancement" towards bringing peace to the conflict-ravaged nation.

Following their discussion, the US president stated Sharaa had "a legitimate chance to unify the country".

The pair met for the first time in May, when Trump visited Riyadh while traveling through Arab nations.

Following that encounter, the US president described him as a "resilient figure" having a "formative history".

His former militant faction operated as the terrorist network's partner in Syria prior to breaking relations in 2016.

Earlier American Trip

This week's diplomatic engagement is not the president's debut journey to the US in the current year. In September, he became the initial Syrian president to present to the UN General Assembly in New York in almost 60 years.

During his address, he declared the nation was "restoring its proper position within the global community" and demonstrated unity with Palestinian citizens in Gaza.
